Rurelec strives to ensure that wherever possible, and in so far as is practical, the most environmentally conscious approach is taken to our operations. All our plants undergo a rigorous Environmental Impact Assessment. The impact of decisions is assessed on an individual basis to allow the most flexible approach.
A measure of our success is that both of the subsidiaries in Argentina and Bolivia have been at the forefront of achieving ground-breaking United Nations approvals for energy saving projects which create CER carbon credits from using waste heat from gas turbines. No power company in Latin America has a higher percentage of MW under control which have been deemed eligible for carbon credits.
Rurelec operates gas-fired plants, the cleanest of hydrocarbon fuels, but we are also working through our Energais subsidiary in Bolivia to promote the use of vegetable oils in isolated power generation in Amazonia. Through this project we hope to substitute the current use of diesel which is potentially damaging to much of a vulnerable part of the Bolivian Amazonian region.
